Samsung Review OLED TV - Metal Flagship on The New OS
Last year, Samsung launched a massive expansion of curved
TVs. Do you want top-end flagship of Samsung - pay extra for a curved screen.
Other vendors, by the way, from flat champions have not given up and offer the
user a choice. As we have seen, in itself curvature special advantages does not
(it would be better used OLED), but Samsung insists on a curved form in
combination with the usual LCD technology - well, that's their right.
Samsung Review OLED TV - Metal Flagship on The New OS |
The flagship series of Samsung HU9000 left a good
impression, although then curved screen was no longer a revelation. The current
high-end models are presented under the heading SUHD, where the first letter is
responsible for enthusiastic epithets like "Seductive",
"Smart", "Stylish", "Superb", which loosely
translated means "the most-most." Well, well, let's see how it turned
out - the most-most Ultra HD TV from Samsung today? And whether it is worth
almost half a million?
Design and construction
Appearance Samsung JS9500 excellent. The combination of
plastic and metal came out successful, so that the letter "S",
probably an ulterior motive appeared in the title?
But Samsung designers gradually moving away from the idea of
ultra-thin frames, experiments with form edging is now started. TV is not shy
centimeter frame, because it is one of the metal ornaments. It is given a
little forward of the screen, so that TV becomes like a picture in low relief.
It would seem a trifle, but at the expense of the JS9500 is not confused with
other models.
Stand intricate shape looks good with a curved shape.
Samsung has managed to avoid the feeling of "heaviness", and it's
important for the TV with a large screen size, because the diagonal JS9500 may
be 78, and 88 inches.
Overall, the Samsung found a recognizable style for older
series of S-UHD, solid metal frame does not look excessive, whereby the
television - not just a plain rectangle with a screen full panel.
Tizen OS
After several years of cosmetic changes, Samsung decided to
radically transform their own Smart TV system. Moreover, the choice fell not on
a unified platform Android TV - Samsung decided to go back to the Tizen OS and
adapt it for television. Presumably, the intention was exceptionally good. In
fact, Samsung transition to Tizen OS clearly recalls the transition LG
company's webOS.
It should be noted that between systems generally have a lot
of similarities. For example, a year earlier Samsung have adopted the idea of
remote working in the Pointer mode and now Tizen OS interface again leads the
association: all icons are hidden in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen,
and even they speak cursor looks like in webOS. Coincidence? I do not think.
However, in order to clearly see the work of Tizen, watch
our video about the new system:
Looking at the list of pre-installed applications on the TV,
it becomes clear what the whole trick. Russian-speaking applications Tizen OS
is now little, but useful - even less. Missing the most popular online cinema
Okko, and with it, and many other services. For example, an application ivi.ru
came with a scratch, one month after the TV went on sale.
Now top Tizen applications leader YouTube, which already is
on anything but toasters. Or do we just have not tested toasters.
Additionally represented Zoomby service and large channel
applications, but much is still lacking. We can only guess what the problem is:
maybe, services have not yet had time to write a fresh customers for TVs on
Tizen OS? But it was about and backward compatibility with previous Samsung
platform.
However, the new system is clearly more convenient to
manage. The entire interface is specially sharpened by a motion-control and
gestures, voice commands are supported. Finally, for novice users to have a
convenient TV Guide with interactive training - a very useful and visual
feature, which introduces all features Tizen OS for ten minutes.
Built-in browser, as usual, pleased with functionality. He
copes with the heavy pages, as well as embedded video plays without any
problems. For small braking, but they do not interfere too much work. The same
applies to the entire system Tizen OS.
Judging by first impressions, transition Samsung TV on Tizen
OS cannot be considered painless. At the very least, significantly reduced the
number of applications - particularly Russian-language service, which is on the
Samsung Smart TV last system was just bulk. How long does it take to fill Tizen
application updates - is anyone's guess. So far, Samsung release regular
updates that improve system performance. Comparing the situation with
competitors, it must be said that the situation is very reminiscent of LG year
ago: early version of webOS also experienced problems with the content and flow
of work, but gradually returned to normal.
Surprisingly, it is best to look at the case of those brands
who decided to switch to Android TV: there and a nice interface, and
applications - Full Google Play. Let's see what can respond to this challenge
Samsung.
As usual, we focus on the main TV functions - creating impressive
images, which would meet all quality standards. To put an image, we use the
best tests and video benchmarks, as well as pay attention to gauge TV that
allows you to compare them in fair conditions with optimal settings.
Test results
On TV Samsung JS9500 only four global picture mode:
"Dynamic", "Standard", "Normal" and
"Cinema". The difference between the gigantic image as brightness,
and on the rest. Suffice it to say that the "Dynamic" and "Normal"
mode is activated with maximum backlight and the HDR simulation, bringing the
peak brightness of 700 cd / m2 or higher. Of course, the brightness of a sunny
day this can be useful, but the image is absolutely "artificial", far
from the natural frame.
The most natural image on the Samsung achieved in the
"Cinema" mode. Let's see if it is well configured by default.
The average gamma was 2.05. This figure is somewhat lower,
which makes the image lighter than the original. Color balance is very even,
only light colors, there is a minimum reddish impurity. The average error in
the Delta E grayscale - 0.78, and it is not a mistake. Factory setting our
instance it was just: the color temperature is very close to the reference
value of 6500K. The color gamut in the "Cinema" and set to "Auto"
close enough to reflect the standard Rec. 709 (HDTV). However, many colors
appear brighter than they should, which contributes to the distortion. Check
for 24 templates Color Checker gives very good results: the average color error
Delta E - 1, 89.
In general, the "Cinema" mode setting out good. In
fact, television is calibrated precisely enough to the plant, with the
exception of understated range. We believe that such accuracy will suit the
majority of the audience, and you just lower the regulator "Gamma" by
1-2 points, to get the optimum range in the region of 2.2-2.3.
In TV there are advanced tools for self-calibration of the
image, where if you want you can use 10-point white balance adjustment and
color management system. In our case, it took only a minimal correction, and
final results will not differ too much from the factory.
Contrast
As we remember from past reviews, the latest series of
Samsung TV had about the same contrast. Cherished rate did not go beyond 3000:
1, which is a typical level for the VA type LCD panels. The current senior
Samsung JS9500 series is equipped with local lighting, numbering from 150 areas
(to 65 inches) up to 240 zones (to 88 inches). Let's see if she was able to
perform a miracle?
If we evaluate the contrast of the usual method - on the
"chessboard» ANSI - then the brightness of 120 cd / m2, we obtain the depth
of black about 0,053 cd / m2 and a contrast ratio of about 2236: 1. That is,
their own possibilities of LCD panels have not changed from previous models,
regardless of the dynamic illumination mode. However, when it comes to dark
scenes, where a significant portion of the frame is covered with black, the TV
will be able to fairly "extinguish" the backlight in these areas.
For example, when measuring the contrast of serial output of
black and white box (On / Off), the TV will turn off the backlight almost all
black screen, except for those areas where there is any indication. The number
of zones does not allow transitions completely "seamless": around
bright objects visible "ghosting", separating them from completely
black background. In real video effect of local dynamic backlight, of course,
is yes, if you do not overdo it with the settings. But management and division
of Samsung JS9500 zones slightly inferior Philips PFL9707 and, especially, the
Panasonic AXR900.
The main reason why Samsung JS9500 using local dynamic
backlight - support for the new format HDR. It is important not only to
"extinguish" the desired area, but also to do some parts of the
picture is much brighter. With this Samsung handles like no other: in
"Dynamic" picture mode and "Normal" brightness reaches
700-760 cd / m2. So far this TV all crept closer to the general HDR
specification, implying brightness of 1000 cd / m2.
The effect is curious: ultra-bright areas are used only
where it is really necessary (for example, the setting sun), and the rest of
the frame is the usual brightness. In this way, the dynamic range is
significantly increased, and with the appropriate content - and it can appear
as early as next year - owners of Samsung JS9500 can extract quite tangible
benefit.
Interfaces and control functionality
Main Samsung interfaces are located on the remote One
Connect box. We have already described this decision as an example of previous
flagship TVs, but about something should be discussed separately. The latest
version of Block One Connect has appeared in the form of active cooling fan,
which is quite annoyingly noisy, if the room is quiet. Therefore, external
power runs the risk of not only occupy additional space but also distracting
noise. A strange decision, even though it is due to the owners of One Connect
TVs of yesteryear can be updated on the Tizen OS.
Unit One Connect interfaces with the previous year have not
changed: it is still equipped with four HDMI ports, the latest version 2.0.
Accordingly, resolution TV supports 2160p (3840x2160) and 4K (4096x2160) at 50
and 60 Hz and sampled at 4: 2: 2 and 4: 4: 4, which was within the N HDMI 1.4
features. With the connection to the PC should be no problems, it is easy to
choose the best mode, but for best results you need a video card with HDMI 2.0.
TV equipped with digital tuners of all European standards:
DVB-T2, DVB-C and DVB-S2. Moreover, satellite connectors provided for just two,
because both tuners can receive two channels simultaneously. Such opportunities
we've seen from Panasonic and Samsung senior series. The dual tuner allows
simultaneous viewing and recording of two programs, as well as to transfer the
background broadcast to mobile devices.
USB ports allow you to connect external storage devices and
play multimedia files. The number of supported formats is very large - built-in
player, you can say, "omnivorous." Built-in player supports video
resolution Ultra HD (2160p), including the latest codec HEVC / H.265. Frankly
speaking, it is difficult to get Ultra HD test materials at 50 or 60 Hz, but a
compilation of demos in 24, 25 and 30 frames per second reproduced quite
cheerfully. It is worth remembering that the maximum supported bit rate - 80
Mbit / s, which is not too much to Ultra HD. You cannot give a guarantee that
future UHD-video will not go beyond these limits by bitrate.
Our selection of test clips with the latest codec HEVC /
H.265 reproduced, as they say, playfully: this time all the videos start
without hesitation, and at last year's model, one roller is not recognized.
